"Oh, I know how they will react and what they will say. They always behave the same way; there is really no point in bringing it up."
In the course of my day I hear this phrase far too frequently and it is patently untrue and an unfortunate mindset to have for a couple of important reasons.
First and foremost and far as I am concerned, no one has the ability to accurately foretell the future so saying that you know what someone will say is simply not true.
Let me explain in more detail the potential negative impact of this statement and the possible reasons why someone would say such a thing.
Firstly, it is a negative statement and implies a negative outcome...generally not cool.
The second negative aspect of this statement is that nobody learns anything from this stalemate. In effect both parties remain ignorant also not cool.
So what could be the motivation behind the belief that you know how someone would react and see the whole exercise as futile.
Here are some possible reasons that may underpin that belief:
1. The individual does not believe that they have the skills to have the conversation in the first place. The good news is that the skills can be easily learnt and implemented.
2. The person does not care enough about the person to want to have the conversation. This may seem like an unusual reason for not sharing the insight however when a person is more concerned about the negative reaction they believe the insight will have then it is also reasonable to conclude that you may be more interested in protecting the person than genuinely sharing your insights regarding their own personal and professional development.
Maybe the issue is more about you than it is them!
3. They have had a negative experience before with this person. Well that is also like saying that because you have had a painful experience before in a relationship that every future relationship will also go this way. Once again this is a negative mindset predicated on one previous experience. Not fair on you or the individual in question.
4. You may just get a successful outcome and the person actually acknowledges your insight and changes a previously disruptive and unhelpful behaviour. Amazingly, some people are frightened as much if not more of being successful with an outcome as they then believe that there is more pressure on them being successful going forward.
Some people prefer not to have expectations placed on themselves by self and others...strange but true.
5. The discussion will be worse than what I imagined and they will confront me over my comments which will leave me embarrassed and powerless going forward in my own mind and in the mind of my colleagues.
Fact is, that may happen, as I certainly cannot predict the future and advise you of what their exact response will be. What I can assure you is that the more you practice the skill of giving people feedback the better you get at dealing with confrontation because you learn from every experience and refine your skills until you are competent in all scenarios and your confidence in your skill is palpable to others. They sense your lack of fear and sense your courage and desire to engage.
6. The individual doesn't want to create waves or a fuss between themselves and the individual in question.
This is an interesting one because once again it is predicated on an assumption that the person will create a fuss over the information and in some way will be uncomfortable with it. Again another assumption, and for the record speaking personally I find that the feedback that I get that focuses on what a person would like to see me change is so much more beneficial than continually being told what I do well.
I believe I grow more from learning what I can do to improve as opposed to a continual reinforcement of what I already have an aptitude for.
So then, next time you catch yourself thinking that there is no point in upsetting someone with feedback designed to help them grow ask yourself this question:
Why am I withholding this information from them and who is the issue really about? Or do I have a genuine desire to help them become a more complete person?
Go on, back yourself in and tell it how it is...respectfully!

Rediscovering...What We Began With And Lost
I was running a professional development workshop today on leadership and time management and I confirmed what I had suspected for a long time...
Folks what I am about to tell you isn't pretty or something to feel good about and the anecdotal evidence is overwhelming.
We are losing the ability to think creatively, innovatively and laterally and the evidence, I think is all around us.
I ask questions in seminars...and, people struggle everywhere to give answers that are creative and insightful. In short, people have lost their intellectual mojo, their thinking independence and the essence of their neurological DNA.
Why is this the case?
Well here is my theory. People are being brow beaten to conform to a particular style of thinking in the business world that rewards behavioural compliance and "a steady as she goes" attitude which smacks of mindlessness and uniformity.
Whilst this may be ok in some circumstances when you think like this for long periods of time there is a real risk that you gradually overtime rewire the neurological pathways that drive thinking outside the square and the spirit of creativity which I think dwells in all of us and was present when we were born.
Creativity is also a source of curiosity which also stimulates us to be enquiring and interested in our immediate environment.
So what are the steps to claim back our mental mojo and ability to think creatively?
Here are a few simple behaviors that you can practice everyday:
1. Practice being in the moment as your creativity and uniqueness is always linked to how immersed you are in your immediate surroundings.
2. When people ask for your opinions practice thinking outside the norm and respond with concepts and ideas that celebrate the uniqueness of your point of view rather than trotting out the same perspective as others.
3. Filter your interpretation of the media and conversation and realize that there are many perspectives on every story and opinion.
4. Practice looking for the opportunity in every situation and practice this every day.
5. Spend time with toddlers and young children and get reacquainted with their simple, logical and uncomplicated views on things...especially how much fun they have which is directly related to how "present" and in the moment
they are.
Get back to being that fun spontaneous person who is always celebrating their uniqueness and peaceful state of mind as it is our most powerful ally in leading a life of fulfillment, fun and contentment.

How to Give Compliments that Stick!
Research has revealed that a general compliment such as "good job" just doesn't cut it anymore.
I mean, sure, it is better than not saying anything, yet the interaction can be some much more powerful if you follow these three simple steps.
So to maximize the impact of your compliment follow these steps:
Step 1: Make the feedback specific...e.g. "Thanks for the wonderful job you did on the last report you submitted".
Step 2: Make the next sentence even more specific and clear...e.g. "Specifically, I was very impressed with how you co-ordinated the sections of the report...it made so much sense to link the information together like that.".
Step 3: The final part is to tell the person how their behaviour and actions benefitted you..."Finally, when you demonstrate that skill you enable me to focus on other areas of the process because I trust your judgement"
So remember...to ensure that your feedback sticks ensure you include these three steps going forward.
You will enjoy delivering this and I can guarantee your team will love to receive it.

Understanding Your Emotions
"Beam"
(The Power of Understanding Your Emotions and Thoughts)
As with most skills in life, practice makes perfect!
Accurately reading your emotional system is a life skill that lays the foundation for all of your future success and is definitely worth the daily practice. In fact it is so important that it is impossible to be successful without this skill, however it is not enough to just be aware of your emotional system promptings you must be able to interpret exactly what the message is.
This is where the principle of “Beam” plays a pivotal role as it directs you to undertake four simple steps which allow you to accurately interpret the precise message behind how you feel.
So what are the four steps to follow when your emotions begin talking to you?
B – Become (What is happening now?)
E – Emotionally (Why am I feeling like this?)
A – Aware (When did this feeling start?)
M – Moment to moment (How am I going to manage this emotion?)
“Emotional Clarity Through Thought Analysis”
Benefits:
Allows you to get in touch with who you really are.
Allows you to systematically reprogram your thinking where necessary.
Provides an immediate insight into how you perceive your world.
Process exposes your thinking paradigms and provides an insight into who you really are?

What the Red Indians Knew...
Few cultures venerate the process of aging as much as the traditional Nth American Red Indians.
The concept of investing the leadership of the tribe into the hands of the wisest person who has had the most experience is both sensible and well considered.
After all there is a saying that a "wise head is the result of experience and reflection".
So why, in our intelligent society do we persist with the notion that aging is both inevitable and undesirable and that it signifies the beginning of the end.
It shouldn't and it doesn't!
Someone once told me that there are three types of aging, Physical aging, Chronological aging and Psychological aging and the only one that really matters is psychological aging.
If we lived in a society that valued aging and the wisdom the process bestowed then I am sure that people would live longer and with a greater sense of purpose and contribution.
No one is going to tell me that I am too old for this or too old to do that. I am quite capable of deciding for myself and in any case my goal is to live past 100 years anyway so I have plenty of time to consider things.

Why the World needs Coaching...
Well having just completed the 3 day level 1 coaching course recently, I was struck by a couple of things which would change the world.
Yeh, I know big statement...
Fundamentally though, apart from the "cool" information that we got to play with the most amazing part of the experience for me was the openness that all participants displayed in relation to receiving feedback around their behaviours.
The humility people had around the concept that I am not perfect and never will be and I am here to lean and become a better person.
For anyone who has had the opportunity to play in this space of openness and acceptance it is incredibly powerful and peaceful.
I reflected that openness allows for very powerful, truthful and insightful communication to take place and from that everyone prospers.
When we are able to manifest that behaviour and mindset in all people across the globe, think of the conversations that could be had and the changes that could be made.
In my opinion, the secret to any meaningful progress and development is to cultivate an open and enquiring mind around the concept of endless possibilities and to continually care enough about someone to tell them the truth.
Coaching in part, is helping people to embrace opportunity or come to grips with their situation and to help them develop a way forward.
The world needs more coaches to encourage people to be open, honest and transparent...it really is better for everybody

Here Comes the Social Media Wave
Just heard a speaker suggest to the Prime Minister that internet marketing should be taught at schools...giving kids the chance to run their own business or at least understand how businesses work and how money is made in businesses and how important product is.
